FAT FREDDY´S DROP celebrate a superlative jazz-soul-rhythm-blues-reggae-dub party in the sold-out Palladium Cologne. LOUIS BAKER completes an event with his one-man show that will not be forgotten in a hurry.
It is now almost exactly 25 years since FAT FREDDY´S DROP saw the light of day as a band. Initially treated as an insider tip, the triumph of the combo, which really does not fit into any category, began after the release of their debut "Live At The Matterhorn", which was recorded not at the Swiss landmark but in the club of the same name in Wellington. The "Matterhorn" was opened in the 1960s by two Swiss brothers in the capital of New Zealand, initially as a café and lounge and finally established as a music club in the 1990s after several changes of ownership.
The first FAT FREDDY'S DROP album released in Europe, "Based On A True Story", sold more than 250,000 copies on the day of its release and is now certified 11 times platinum in the band's home country alone. So it's no surprise that the run on tickets started when the tour dates were announced, especially since sold-out concert halls have always been the trademark of the band, which is known for grandiose live events. The first act in the Palladium, which has been sold out for months, is LOUIS BAKER, who has taken on the task of warming up alone with a Stratocaster and various backing tracks, which he masters with flying colors. BAKER is also not easy to pigeonhole; the evening's repertoire ranges from the poppy "Black Crow" to the PRINCE classic "Purple Rain".
The Palladium is now at operating temperature and is waiting for what is to come during the short conversion phase. As soon as the first sounds from the PA come, deafening cheers break out, making the guys from New Zealand smile and visibly delighted. The groove immediately gets stuck in the ear canals and creates a collective party atmosphere, which is reflected in some exalted movements, especially since Joe Lindsay on the trombone sets a good example and shows what it should look like. In addition to the band's most dazzling member, Dallas Tamaira aka "Joe Dukie" (vocals, guitar), Chris Faiumu "DJ Fitchie" (percussion, samples), Toby Laing "Tony Chang" (trumpet), Convay Jeune (guitar), Iain Gordon "Dobie Blaze" (keyboards), and Scott Towers "Chopper Reedz" (saxophone) will be playing the instruments this evening. Depending on the song, Mark Williams "MC Slave" will join them from time to time, taking on the rap parts.
While many bands today strictly adhere to the specifications of the titles of their recordings recorded for eternity during their live shows, FAT FREDDY'S DROP have been characterized since the early days by constantly variable interpretations of their songs, which are seemingly effortlessly transformed into sound collages that sometimes only have the hooks in common with the original versions. This is great because it is always surprising and probably one of the reasons for the always sold-out tours around the globe. "Slo Mo" from the current album of the same name (review here) shows the complexity and joy of playing of the band, which is always able to elicit new facets from their own compositions.
Later in the evening there will be another reunion with LOUIS BAKER, who together with FAT FREDDY'S DROP once again proves his versatility and puts the Palladium into a communal groove. The CONCLUSION of the evening can therefore only be: FAT FREDDY`S DROP are a force of nature live that you simply have to experience. Unfortunately there are no more tickets available for the show on December 3rd in Hamburg, after that they will be going to Denmark and Great Britain before the band can be seen in Australia in March. It is a firm promise that FAT FREDDY`S DROP will soon be returning to Germany. Our recommendation: you have to go!

FAT FREDDY´S DROP zelebrieren im ausverkauften Palladium Köln eine Jazz-Soul-Rhythm-Blues-Reggae-Dub-Party der Superlative. LOUIS BAKER komplettiert mit seiner One-Man-Show ein Event, das man so schnell nicht vergessen wird.
Ziemlich genau 25 Jahre ist es nun her, dass FAT FREDDY´S DROP als Band das Licht der Welt erblickten. Zunächst als Geheimtipp gehandelt, startete der Siegeszug der eigentlich in keine Schublade passenden Combo nach Veröffentlichung des Debüts „Live At The Matterhorn“, das nicht etwa auf dem Schweizer Wahrzeichen, sondern im gleichnamigen Club in Welligton aufgenommen wurde. Das „Matterhorn“ wurde in den 1960er Jahren von zwei Schweizer Brüdern in der Hauptstadt Neuseelands zunächst als Café und Lounge eröffnet und schließlich nach einigen Besitzerwechseln in den 1990ern als Musikclub etabliert.
Das erste in Europa veröffentlichte FAT FREDDY´S DROP-Album, „Based On A True Story“, verkaufte sich bereits am Tag der Veröffentlichung mehr als 250.000 Mal und ist mittlerweile allein in der Heimat der Band 11-fach Platin zertifiziert. Somit ist es auch keine Überraschung, dass mit Ankündigung der Tourdaten der Run auf die Tickets startete, zumal ausverkaufte Konzertsäle seit je her das Markenzeichen der Band sind, die für grandiose Live-Events bekannt ist. Den Anfang im seit Monaten ausverkauften Palladium macht LOUIS BAKER, der allein mit Stratocaster und diversen Backing-Tracks die Aufgabe des Einheizers übernommen hat, die er mit Bravour meistert. Auch BAKER lässt sich nicht ganz einfach in eine Schublade stecken, das Repertoire des Abends reicht vom poppigen „Black Crow“ bis hin zum PRINCE-Klassiker „Purple Rain“.
Somit ist das Palladium auf Betriebstemperatur und harrt während der kurzen Umbauphase der Dinge, die da kommen sollten. Schon bei den ersten Tönen aus der PA bricht ohrenbetäubender Jubel aus, der die Jungs aus Neuseeland zum Schmunzeln bringt und sichtlich erfreut. Sofort setzt sich der Groove in den Gehörgängen fest und sorgt für kollektive Partystimmung, die sich in teilweise exaltierten Bewegungen niederschlägt, zumal Joe Lindsay an der Posaune hier mit gutem Beispiel vorangeht und zeigt, wie das auszusehen hat. Neben dem wohl schillerndsten Bandmitglied greifen an diesem Abend Dallas Tamaira aka "Joe Dukie" (Gesang, Gitarre), Chris Faiumu "DJ Fitchie" (Percussion, Samples), Toby Laing "Tony Chang" (Trompete), Convay Jeune (Gitarre), Iain Gordon "Dobie Blaze" (Keyboards), sowie Scott Towers "Chopper Reedz" (Saxophon) zu den Instrumenten. Dazu gesellt sich ab und zu, je nach Titel, Mark Williams "MC Slave", der die Rap-Parts übernimmt.
Während viele Bands in der heutigen Zeit während ihrer Liveshows sich strikt an Vorgaben der für die Ewigkeit aufgenommenen Titel ihrer Tonträger halten, zeichnen sich FAT FREDDY´S DROP seit den Anfangstagen durch stets variable Interpretationen ihrer Songs aus, die scheinbar mühelos in Klangkollagen verwandelt werden, die mit den ursprünglichen Versionen mitunter nur noch die Hooks gemeinsam haben. Das ist großartig weil stets überraschend und wohl mit ein Grund für stets ausverkaufte Tourneen rund um den Globus. „Slo Mo“ vom gleichnamigen, aktuellen Album (Review hier) zeigt die Vielschichtigkeit und Spielfreude der Band, die ihren eigenen Kompositionen stets neue Facetten zu entlocken vermag.
Später am Abend gibt es nochmals ein Wiedersehen mit LOUIS BAKER, der zusammen mit FAT FREDDY`S DROP ein weiteres Mal seine Wandelbarkeit unter Beweis stellt und das Palladium erneut in gemeinschaftlichen Groove versetzt. Das FAZIT des Abends kann somit nur lauten: FAT FREDDY`S DROP sind live eine Naturgewalt, die man einfach erlebt haben muss. Für die Show am 03. Dezember in Hamburg gibt es leider keine Karten mehr, danach geht es nach Dänemark und Großbritannien, bevor die Band im März in Australien zu sehen sein wird. Dass FAT FREDDY`S DROP bald wieder nach Deutschland zurückkehren werden, ist fest versprochen. Unsere Empfehlung: da muss man hin!
