BATTLE BEAST | The Circus Is Coming To Town 2022 - Zeche Bochum

More than three years have passed since the Finns last performed at the Zeche Bochum, three years in which Noora and her formidable comrades were unable to go on tour, but did not sit back and do nothing, but diligently worked on new material, which, however, can only now be presented live to fans in Germany.

When I arrive, there is already a considerable crowd of people in front of the door of the Zeche waiting to be let in, a sight that has not been seen in recent years. The evening is opened by Berlin's FUTURE PALACE, who have brought their current album "Run" with them, which has been in stores since June 10th. The mix of hard guitar riffs, driving drums and great melodies is extremely well received in the Zeche and is celebrated accordingly.

After the renovation has been successfully completed - unlike three years ago - BATTLE BEAST now takes the scepter in hand, which Noora Louhimo swings majestically back and forth in the form of a fluorescent rod in the first seconds of the show. "Circus Of Doom", the title track of the current album, is played with incredible vehemence and you can tell from everyone on stage how much they have missed live shows like this one. After "Straight To The Heart" and "Familiar Hell", front lady Noora has the first opportunity to address the magnificent Bochum audience to thank them for their support, because the Zeche is packed on this Monday evening.

"Armageddon" and "Place That We Call Home" are two more tracks from the current album, which the fans are already singing with all the lyrics. The mix is ​​perfect and with "No More Hollywood Endings" from the 2019 long player, the party picks up speed again. After "Eye Of The Storm", joker and bass player Eero Sipilä takes over briefly, performs "Eine Ganz Neue Welt" and thus reveals himself to be an Aladdin fan. After this excursion into the world of musicals, there are more metallic songs. With "Where Angels Fear To Fly" and "Bastard Son Of Odin", BATTLE BEAST pick up speed again. Of course, there is also the tried and tested show act by keyboardist and producer Janne Björkrod, who not only abuses his keytar but also the electronic drum kit. The self-mixed drinks (gin and tonic) are partly distributed to the audience, but some are also consumed by the audience themselves. Before the band can sing "Russian Roulette", the keyboardist has to prove his ability to hold his liquor and drink a bottle of beer that joker Eero Sipilä forces into him in one go. “Wings Of Light” and “Eden” end the regular set, with the roaring crowd bringing BATTLE BEAST back on stage for an extended encore.

First there is a fantastic guitar solo by the formidable tour guitarist, who brilliantly replaces the regular guitarist Joona Björkroth. “Master Of Illusion”, “King For A Day” and “Beyond The Burning Skies” then provide an incredible power for the grand finale of a “perfect show”, as Noora Louhimo aptly describes it. There are then standing ovations on the grandstand itself at the end of the credits, accompanied - as always - by the “Top Gun Theme” by Steve Stevens.

CONCLUSION: Noora LOUHIMO and BATTLE BEAST remain the measure of all things in the field of melodic power metal and I expressly include all bands in which frontmen have the vocal part. Anyone who has not yet experienced BEASTER and especially the hurricane that Noora unleashes live should do so as soon as possible. Mehr als drei Jahre sind seit dem letzten Gastspiel der Finnen in der Zeche Bochum ins Land gegangen, drei Jahre, in denen Noora und ihre formidablen Mitstreiter zwar nicht auf Tournee gehen konnten, sich indessen aber nicht auf die faule Haut gelegt, sondern eifrig neues Material erarbeitet haben, das allerdings erst jetzt den Fans auch in Deutschland live präsentiert werden kann.

Bei meiner Ankunft steht bereits eine beachtliche Menschenansammlung vor der Tür der Zeche und wartet auf den Einlass, ein Anblick, den man in den vergangenen Jahren nicht mehr beobachten konnte. Den Abend eröffnen die Berliner FUTURE PALACE, die ihr aktuelles Album „Run“ mit im Gepäck haben, das seit dem 10. Juni in den Läden steht. Der Mix aus harten Gitarrenriffs, treibendem Schlagzeug und tollen Melodien kommt in der Zeche enorm gut an und wird entsprechend gefeiert.

Nachdem der Umbau - anders als vor drei Jahren - erfolgreich abgeschlossen ist, nehmen BATTLE BEAST nun das Zepter in die Hand, das Noora Louhimo in Form einer fluoreszierenden Rute in den ersten Sekunden der Show majestätisch hin und her schwenkt. „Circus Of Doom“, Title-Track der aktuellen Scheibe, wird mit unglaublicher Vehemenz gespielt und man merkt allen Beteiligten auf der Bühne an, wie sehr man Liveshows wie diese hier vermisst hat. Nach „Straight To The Heart“ und „Familiar Hell“ hat Frontlady Noora erstmals Gelegenheit, sich an das grandiose Bochumer Publikum zu wenden, um sich für die Unterstützung zu bedanken, denn die Zeche ist an diesem Montagabend rappel voll.

Mit „Armageddon“ und „Place That We Call Home“ folgen zwei weitere Titel des aktuellen Albums, die bereits textsicher von den Fans intoniert werden. Die Mischung passt und mit „No More Hollywood Endings“ vom 2019er Longplayer nimmt die Party nochmals mehr Fahrt auf. Nach „Eye Of The Storm“ übernimmt kurzfristig Spaßvogel und Bassmann Eero Sipilä das Kommando, gibt „Eine Ganz Neue Welt“ zum Besten und outet sich so als Aladin-Fan. Nach diesem Ausflug in die Welt des Musicals, gibt es wieder etwas metallischeres Liedgut. Mit „Where Angels Fear To Fly“ und „Bastard Son Of Odin“ nehmen BATTLE BEAST wieder mächtig Fahrt auf. Natürlich gibt es auch wieder die bewährte Showeinlage von Keyboarder und Produzent Janne Björkrod, der neben seiner Keytar auch das elektronische Drumkit malträtiert. Die selbst gemixten Drinks (Gin-Tonic) werden teilweise an das Publikum verteilt, teilweise aber auch gerne selbst konsumiert. Bevor die Band „Russian Roulette“ intonieren kann, muss der Keyboarder noch seine Trinkfestigkeit unter Beweis stellen und eine Flasche Bier, die ihm Spaßbäckchen Eero Sipilä eintrichtert, auf ex trinken. „Wings Of Light“ und „Eden“ beenden das reguläre Set, wobei das tosende Publikum BATTLE BEAST zu einer ausgedehnten Zugabe auf die Bühne zurückholt.

Zunächst gibt es ein fantastisches Gitarrensolo des formidablen Tour-Gitarristen, der den etatmäßigen Gitarrero Joona Björkroth grandios vertritt. „Master Of Illusion“, „King For A Day“ und „Beyond The Burning Skies“ sorgen dann mit unglaublicher Power für den grandiosen Abschluss einer „perfekten Show“, wie es Noora Louhimo treffend beschreibt. Standing Ovations gibt es dann zum Abspann selbst auf der Tribühne, begleitet – wie immer – vom „Top Gun Theme“ von Steve Stevens.

FAZIT: Noora LOUHIMO und BATTLE BEAST bleiben im Bereich des Melodic Power Metal das Maß aller Dinge und ich schließe hier ausdrückliche alle Kapellen mit ein, in denen Frontmänner den Gesangspart innehaben. Wer die BEASTER und insbesondere den Orkan, den Noora entfacht, noch nicht live erlebt hat, sollte diese Erfahrung schnellstens nachholen. BATTLE BEAST jedenfalls zeigen sich an diesem Abend zuversichtlich, dass es schon bald ein Wiedersehen geben wird. Anytime...anywhere!
