SABATON deliver a grandiose spectacle in the LANXESS Arena Cologne. BABYMETAL and LORDI in the supporting act for a great concert evening
If there is a tank on the stage in the LANXESS Arena, it can only mean one thing: SABATON are in town. The band, which gave a guest performance in the Live Music Hall exactly ten years ago, has now easily outgrown the smaller venues and easily fills the arena with more than ten times the audience capacity. The popular spectacle is therefore taking place in a suitable setting; the stage structures alone would have filled the entire Live Music Hall. But before the big spectacle can begin, LORDI and BABYMETAL have the task of getting the audience up to operating temperature.
LORDI and BABYMETAL: Heavy meets Kawaii Metal
The series opens with LORDI, who performed the final concert at W:O:A 2022, but will leave the stage this evening after eight songs, but not without first transforming the arena into a large choir with "Hard Rock Hallelujah", the ESC winning song from 2006. A short but strong guest appearance. It continues with BABYMETAL, the pioneers of Kawaii Metal, who open with "Babymetal Death", which is sung solo by the brilliant backing band. Technically at an extremely high level, the masked men in the background immediately have the hall on their side. The three ladies in focus only pick up the microphone from "Megitsune", and there are also perfectly rehearsed choreographies that will be presented this evening behind the barbed wire and sandbags of the SABATON stage decoration. None of this detracts from the exuberant mood, because it seems that BABYMETAL won over numerous metal fans' hearts that evening. The band will be on a headline tour in Germany in the fall. It will be exciting.
SABATON: Fire and Flame
SABATON are storytellers. The fact that their stories are about war, warships or battles explains the martial appearance of the stage decoration with tanks and lots of pyrotechnics. Even during the opener "Ghost Devision" more fireworks are set off than would be the case in a small Swedish town on New Year's Eve. There is also music with catchy hooks and lyrics that, on closer inspection, are anything but war-glorifying. The fact that the band has been wrongly accused of glorifying war in the past is another story that would go beyond the scope of this concert report. It continues with "Bismarck", whose fate is probably known to most people. In addition to the lavish show interludes, the guys around Joakim Brodén play fine power metal with unmistakable melodies.
SABATON: The "one more beer" cult
By the second song, the frontman has to allow himself "one more beer" at the behest of the audience, which is easily emptied "in one go". This procedure then goes around in turn over the course of the concert, much to the delight of all the musicians. Halfway through the show, bassist Pär Sundström has time to remind everyone that the band was a guest at the Live Music Hall Cologne about 10 years ago. When asked, the organizer at the time had explained to SABATON that if they wanted to play larger events, they should aim for the Palladium in Cologne. Per asked at the time whether there was a larger location in Cologne that they could play. The answer was, of course, the Lanxess, and the postscript "but that's probably a size too big" turns out to be downright cute given the band's current popularity.
SABATON: Bombast with heart
To describe the show as bombastic is a serious understatement, because in addition to the band, numerous actors appear on the stage who play the plot of the songs in smaller scenes. In addition to the fiery salvos of pyrotechnics, there are also visual clips on the LED wall in the background, which are supported by tinsel and snow in the form of dry ice. "Christmas Truce", the last entry on the official setlist, tells the story of an unauthorized ceasefire during the First World War. On December 24, 1914, German and British soldiers along the Western Front in Flanders laid down their arms and fraternized. It cannot be ruled out that this story has been embellished over the decades. The bottom line, however, is still clear today: war is always senseless and demands its victims among those who are sent into battle by the respective rulers. A moving moment in the LANXESS.
Afterwards, SABATON briefly leave the stage to perform the grand finale of the show with "Primo Victoria", "Swedish Pagans" and "To Hell and Back".
CONCLUSION: Ten years after their guest appearance at the Live Music Hall, SABATON effortlessly fill the ten times larger LANXESS ARENA and celebrate a bombastic show of superlatives. In addition to the impressive effects, the music also leaves nothing to be desired. Fortunately, the title of the tour is not programmatic, because as tour manager Nick assured, "The Tour To End All Tours" will not be the Swedes' last concert tour. See you!
SABATON liefern in der LANXESS Arena Köln ein grandioses Spektakel. BABYMETAL und LORDI im Vorprogramm eines tollen Konzertabends
Wenn in der LANXESS Arena ein Panzer auf der Bühne steht, kann dies nur eines bedeuten: SABATON sind in der Stadt. Die Band, die noch vor genau zehn Jahren ein Gastspiel in der Live Music Hall gegeben hat, ist den kleineren Locations mittlerweile locker entwachsen und füllt die Arena mit mehr als der zehnfachen Zusachauerkapazität mit Leichtigkeit. Das angesagte Spektakel findet somit in einem passenden Rahmen statt, allein die Bühnenaufbauten hätten die komplette Live Music Hall gefüllt. Doch bevor das große Spektakel beginnen kann, haben LORDI und BABYMETAL die Aufgabe, das Publikum schon einmal auf Betriebstemperatur zu bringen.
LORDI und BABYMETAL: Heavy- meets Kawaii-Metal
Den Reigen eröffnen LORDI, die auf dem W:O:A 2022 das Abschlusskonzert bestritten haben, am heutigen Abend aber nach acht Songs von der Bühne gehen, allerdings nicht ohne zuvor mit „Hard Rock Hallelujah“, dem ESC Siegertitel aus dem Jahr 2006, die Arena in einen großen Chor verwandelt zu haben. Ein kurzes aber starkes Gastspiel. Weiter geht es mit BABYMETAL, den Pionieren des Kawaii-Metals, die mit „Babymetal Death“, der gesangstechnisch im Alleingang von der fulminanten Begleitband bestritten wird, eröffnen. Technisch auf extrem hohem Niveau unterwegs, haben die Maskenmänner im Hintergrund die Halle sofort auf ihrer Seite. Die drei Damen im Fokus greifen erst ab „Megitsune“ zum Mikrofon, daneben gibt es perfekt einstudierte Choreografien, die an diesem Abend hinter Stacheldraht und Sandsäcken der SABATON Bühnendekoration präsentiert werden. Das alles tut der ausgelassenen Stimmung keinen Abbruch, denn wie es scheint, haben BABYMETAL an diesem Abend zahlreiche Metal-Herzen hinzugewonnen. Im Herbst ist die Band auf Headliner-Tour in Deutschland unterwegs. Man darf gespannt sein.
SABATON: Feuer und Flamme
SABATON sind Geschichtenerzähler. Dass ihre Geschichten von Krieg, Kriegsschiffen oder Schlachten handeln, erklärt das martialische Erscheinungsbild der Bühnendeko mit Panzer und jeder Menge Pyrotechnik. Schon beim Opener „Ghost Devision“ wird mehr Feuerwerk abgefackelt als dies in einer schwedischen Kleinstadt an Silvester der Fall wäre. Zudem gibt es Musik mit eingängigen Hooks und Texten, die bei genauerer Betrachtung alles andere als kriegsverherrlichend sind. Dass der Band in der Vergangenheit zu unrecht unterstellt wurde, den Krieg zu verherrlichen, ist eine andere Geschichte die zu untersuchen den Rahmen dieses Konzertberichts sprengen würde. Weiter geht es mit „Bismarck“, deren Schicksal den meisten bekannt sein dürfte. Neben den üppigen Showeinlagen spielen die Jungs um Joakim Brodén feinen Power-Metal mit unverwechselbaren Melodien.
SABATON: Der „noch ein Bier“ Kult
Schon beim zweiten Song muss sich der Frontmann auf Geheiß des Publikums „noch ein Bier“ genehmigen, das auch locker „auf ex“ geleert wird. Diese Prozedur geht dann im Laufe des Konzerts reihum, sehr zur Freude aller Musiker. Zur Halbzeit der Show hat Bassmann Pär Sundström Zeit, daran zu erinnern, dass die Band vor etwa 10 Jahren noch in der Live Music Hall Köln zu Gast gewesen ist. Der damalige Veranstalter hatte SABATON auf Nachfrage erklärt, dass man, wenn man größere Veranstaltungen bestreiten wolle, das Palladium in Köln anpeilen sollte. Per fragte damals, ob es noch eine größere Location in Köln geben würde, die man spielen könne. Die Antwort lautete selbstverständlich: die Lanxess, der Nachsatz „aber das ist wohl eine Nummer zu groß“ erweist sich angesichts der aktuellen Popularität der Band als geradezu putzig.
SABATON: Bombast mit Herz
Die Show als bombastisch zu bezeichnen, ist eine arge Untertreibung, denn neben der Band treten zahlreiche Schauspieler auf den Plan, die die Handlung der Songs in kleineren Szenen spielen. Zudem gibt es neben den feurigen Salven der Pyrotechnik immer wieder auch visuelle Einspieler auf der LED-Wall im Hintergrund, die von Lametta und Schnee in Form von Trockeneis unterstützt werden. „Christmas Truce“, letzter Eintrag der offiziellen Setlist, erzählt die Geschichte einer nicht autorisierten Waffenruhe während des Ersten Weltkriegs. Am 24. Dezember 1914 legten Deutsche und Britische Soldaten entlang der Westfront in Flandern die Waffen nieder und verbrüderten sich. Dass diese Geschichte über die Jahrzehnte hinweg immer weiter ausgeschmückt wurde, kann nicht ausgeschlossen werden. Die Quintessenz allerdings ist bis in die heutige Zeit deutlich: Krieg ist immer sinnlos und fordert seine Opfer unter denjenigen, die von den jeweiligen Machthabern in die Schlacht geschickt werden. Ein bewegender Moment in der LANXESS.
Danach gehen SABATON kurz von der Bühne, um mit „Primo Victoria“, „Swedish Pagans“ und „To Hell and Back“ das grandiose Finale der Show zu bestreiten.
FAZIT: SABATON füllen zehn Jahre nach ihrem Gastspiel in der Live Music Hall die zehnfach größere LANXESS ARENA mühelos und zelebrieren eine bombastische Show der Superlative. Neben den eindrucksvollen Effekten lässt auch die musikalische Seite nichts zu wünschen übrig. Glücklicherweise ist der Titel der Tour nicht Programm, denn wie Tourmanager Nick versicherte, wird „The Tour To End All Tours“ nicht die letzte Konzertreise der Schweden bleiben. Wir sehen uns!
